STUDENT COUNCIL
Section
27 of the Education Act set our four specific duties for Boards of
Management
1)
A Board of Management shall establish and maintain procedures for
the purpose of informing students in the school of the activities
of the school.
2)
A Board of Management in second level schools shall encourage and
help students to set up a Student Council and shall assist a
Student Council when established
3)
A Board of Management shall draw up rules for the establishment of
a Student Council which shall provide for the election of members
and the dissolution of a Council. The rules should be in line
with the guidelines issued by the Minister.
4)
Finally, a Board will have a role in considering the rules
governing meetings of the Student Council, and the conduct of its
affairs.
Additionally
Department of Education and Science guidelines direct that ‘In a
co-educational school, provision should be made to allow for an
appropriate gender balance on the Council’.
OUR
CONSTITUTION
Membership
The
membership of the Student Council will consist of eighteen students
elected as follows:

Three
from 2nd and 3rd year groups
-
Six
from 5th and 6th year groups
It is
recommended that shortly after the start of the school year, the
first year-year head should nominate a first year student to attend
Council meetings as an observer.

OBJECTIVES
These
include:

To
afford students the opportunity to play an active part in the
corporate life of the school.

To help
create the conditions conducive towards the development of
interpersonal relationships characteristic of this
school.

To
encourage students to become self-confident, responsible and
caring.

To
foster in students a sense of loyalty and pride in their
school.

To
improve communication at all levels – staff, students and
parents
